Discover the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA)

The Cancun Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) offers a unique scuba diving and snorkeling experience that combines art, marine conservation, and adventure beneath the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean. Located off the coast of Isla Mujeres and accessible from the Hotel Zone in Cancun, MUSA is the largest underwater museum in the world, with over 500 life-size sculptures meticulously placed to promote coral growth and marine biodiversity.

An Artistic and Ecological Masterpiece

Founded in 2009 by sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, in collaboration with Jaime Gonzalez, MUSA was established within the National Marine Park to alleviate pressure on the natural coral reefs. The project features iconic installations like the Silent Evolution and the famous VW Beetle sculpture, designed to protect and nurture marine life. Each sculpture is made from marine-friendly materials, and with time, these underwater artworks become thriving coral reefs, enhancing the habitat for diverse marine species.

Diving and Snorkeling at MUSA: What to Expect

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned diver, MUSA offers an accessible and unforgettable experience. You can explore the sculptures either by scuba diving or snorkeling. For certified divers, MUSA’s Manchones Reef is a popular dive site, with installations at depths up to 30 feet. Beginners often explore the shallower Punta Nizuc site, which still offers an impressive view of the underwater sculptures.

Our tours depart daily from Cancun’s Hotel Zone marina and take you to the MUSA Isla Mujeres site — the main sculpture installation with 500+ life-size works by Jason deCaires Taylor. No need to arrange a separate ferry to Isla Mujeres. We handle the boat transfer so you dive the best site with none of the logistics

Highlights of MUSA’s Sculptures

  • Silent Evolution: This installation by Jason deCaires Taylor is a mesmerizing display of life-size figures, depicting various aspects of humanity. Over time, they become encrusted with coral, transforming into an underwater oasis.

  • VW Beetle Sculpture: Designed by deCaires Taylor, this eco-friendly sculpture provides shelter for marine life and attracts curious snorkelers and divers alike.

  • National Marine Park and Coral Reefs: MUSA is located in a protected area, where the carefully designed sculptures support coral reef growth. Divers and snorkelers also encounter the natural beauty of Manchones Reef, teeming with colorful fish, sea turtles, and other marine species.
